Learn about Betwixt & Between Theater, Miriam and Scott
Betwixt & Between Theater Company is a professional company based in Basel and founded by Miriam Cohn and Scott Holland in 2019.
Our activities include in-house theatrical productions as well as workshops and classes for children, adolescents and adults. The company specializes in bilingual theatre activities in German and English with the aim to promote an interest and understanding of other languages by using the means of theatre.
For us, the name “Betwixt & Between” means the space between languages, experiences, fiction and reality and above all between humans, which we experience and create in the processes of making theatre and which is the basis for creating new worlds together with our audiences and participants, be they fictional or real, tangible or intangible.
Miriam
Scott
Miriam Cohn is a US born Swiss and grew up in the area of Basel. She received her degree in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Basel before starting her training as a theater pedagogue at SpielRaum. Institut für Theaterpädagogik in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany).
She has been active in all aspects of theater on, behind and in front of the stage for more than twenty years now. She performs in plays, directs and gives workshops, often for children. Since 2010, she is part of the team at the Theater Arlecchino in Basel.
She understands her work as a theater pedagogue primarily as an artistic process in which all participants collaborate and thus create a space for expression, creation and imagination.
Miriam is trying to build bridges all the time - for example between cultural anthropology and theater or between languages.
Scott Holland went to the University of Washington in Seattle WA and received a B.A. in Theatre. He has co-lead acting workshops in the US with Freehold Theatre collective (Seattle) and sat in on several children’s acting classes with teachers in the United States. He has taught acting workshops for children and teens (ages 7-12) since 2017. He has been a member of the Basel English Panto Group since 2007 in which he has been in most of the Panto productions in a principal role. He was also a principal actor in Geneva’s Amateur Operatic Society Pantos (2011 & 2012) and in 2 dramatic productions with Geneva’s Amateurs dramatic society (GEDS). He has previously been a standing officer of both the Semi-Circle dramatic club of Basel and the Basel English Panto Group.
In 2013, he assistant directed the Panto production of ‘Beauty & the Beast’ with Richard Brown, ‘Dick Whittington’ (2016) with director Peter Hilton and “The Little Mermaid” (2019) with Susan Aeschbach-Jagger. Scott has also directed the full length comedy “Blithe Spirit” by Noel Coward which was produced by Semi-Circle in June of 2017 and is currently in rehearsals directing Christopher Durang's "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" also for Semi-Circle Basel.
In 2019, he co-founded Betwixt & Between Theater with Miriam and has co-written, co-produced and acted in the inaugural performance of “Hänsel & Gretel. Lost & Found” in Basel.
